Next Sheffield Wednesday Manager Odds: Xisco Munoz announced as Owls boss

Update: 05.07.23

Sheffield Wednesday’s search for a new manager has come to an end with the club announcing the appointment of former Watford manager Xisco Munoz as their new boss.

Sheffield Wednesday have spent much of the summer searching for a new manager following the departure by mutual consent of Darren Moore. The Owls are back in the Championship thanks to their League One play-off final victory over local rivals Barnsley and they have now appointed former Watford boss Xisco Munoz as their new boss, his main remit being to keep the club in the Championship and build towards promotion into the Premier League.

Xisco was only at Vicarage Road for 10 months but during that time he managed to build on the work of Vladimir Ivic by lifting Watford into second position in the Championship and into the Premier League, however he was subsequently sacked by the Hornets with the side sitting in 14th position in the top flight. His most recent appointment was at Cypriot side Famagusta where he was sacked early this year after a five-match losing run.

Following his appointment as Sheffield Wednesday boss, Xisco Munoz said: “We need to start building and have a very good process. Football is to be enjoyed, not as in a happy life. When you’re on the pitch it’s about work.

It’s important when you arrive at one place you need to know what the fans are demanding. Today I spoke to the guys about starting work hard. We have a good group.

“want to use the people working within the club. I’ve been given everything I need to work. I’ll bring people and for me this is very nice.

“We need the players, the training ground and the fans. Our first goal is we arrive and try to improve on the training ground. Now is the moment for everybody to start pushing.

If we love the club I don’t need fighting. We need the fans to push us and stay together.”

Update: 03.07.23

Sheffield Wednesday are stepping up their search for a suitable replacement for recently-departed Darren Moore and another prominent name has been thrown into the ring – namely Jess Thorup.

Following their victory over near-neighbours Barnsley in the League One play-off final and subsequent promotion back to the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday have parted ways with popular manager Darren Moore and since then there have been many men linked with the vacant position at Hillsborough. Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri is renowned for keeping his cards very close to his chest with regard to appointing managers and with the clubs opening pre-season friendly match fast approaching, no-one appears to be any the wiser as to whom the new manager will be.

Over the past few days the rumour mill has gone into overdrive with reports suggesting that former Watford boss Xisco Munoz may be in the running, however the latest rumour is that Jess Thorup of FC Copenhagen is a serious contender for the position.

Dean Smith is still out-and-out favourite to replace Darren Moore in the Sheffield Wednesday hot-seat while the odds on former Luton Town boss Nathan Jones have been decisively shortened over the past week or so. Slaven Bilic is also linked to the post and the hope amongst all associated with the club is that a decision won’t take much longer given that the new Championship campaign gets underway in exactly one months’ time.

Darren Moore lifted Sheffield Wednesday into the Championship at the end of last season but following his shock departure from Hillsborough, the Owls are now on the hunt for a suitable replacement to guide them through a tough Championship campaign.

Step-up the search

It was something of a surprise when Darren Moore decided to up-sticks and leave newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday just days after they beat local rivals Barnsley 1-0 in the League One play-off final. Nevertheless the fact is that he is now gone and the Owls will need to step-up their search for a suitable replacement ahead of the new season.

Commenced talks

The latest news in their search for a new manager is that the club have commenced talks with former Leicester City and Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, the 52-year-old currently out of work after departing from Leicester City after their drop down to the Championship at the end of 2022/23.

Short-term contract

Smith arrived at the King Power Stadium on a short-term contract in April after being dismissed by Norwich City earlier in the campaign and he is currently firm favourite to take the reins at Hillsborough, most leading UK bookmakers going 8/11 that he succeeds Moore. He led Aston Villa to promotion up to the top-flight in 2019, however he was sacked by the West Midlands club in 2020/21 following a poor run of form.
