Barnsley failed to haul themselves into the Championship for next season despite making it into the League One play-off final and they are now on the search for a new manager following the departure of Michael Duff to Portsmouth. First-team coach Michael Devaney is firm favourite to take the reins but an official announcement is yet to be made.
Barnsley play their next pre-season friendly this Saturday – against Fylde – and as yet they haven’t announced who will take the reins following the recent departure of Michael Duff. The South Yorkshire side got their pre-season campaign underway with a 2-1 victory over Worksop Town, Martin Devaney in the hot-seat in a caretaker capacity. The Reds are thought to be getting closer to appointing Devaney on a permanent basis with the interview process having been completed and the club have certainly succeeded in conducting their business away from the public gaze.
Devaney is considered to be by far the strongest contender for the vacant position although other figures prominent in the betting include former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, former centre-back Darren Moore, former Southampton and Luton Town boss Nathan Jones and Stockport County gaffer Dave Challinor.
Moore left newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in June after steering the Owls back into the Championship on the back of a play-off final win over Barnsley. The alleged reason for his departure was due to him asking for his wages to be quadrupled and if this is indeed the case, then he would clearly be well out of Barnsley’s reach.

League One side Barnsley have gone through numerous head coaches in recent seasons although a large percentage of these have left the Tykes of their own accord. With Michael Duff recently joining Portsmouth, the South Yorkshire outfit are once again in the market for a new manager and at the time of writing, first-team coach Martin Devaney seems the man most likely to take the post.
Martin Devaney is currently first-team coach at Oakwell but there is now every possibility that he will be promoted to head coach and fill the hot-seat recently vacated by Michael Duff who has moved south to join Portsmouth. Since the appointment of Daniel Stendel at Oakwell five years ago, the Tykes have gone through six permanent managers. Most recent boss Michael Duff was in charge for just one season and after taking his men to the League One play-off final (where they lost to Sheffield Wednesday), he was always going to be the target of many second tier sides.
With Swansea City losing Russell Martin to newly-relegated Southampton, the South Wales outfit made Duff their main target and got their man last week, leaving Barnsley with a vacancy to fill. Nevertheless, it now seems that the Barnsley hierarchy have someone in mind.
Martin Devaney knows Barnsley inside out due to him playing for the Tykes between 2005 and 2011. He retired a few seasons later and took the role of development phase coach at Oakwell in 2015. At the close of the 2021/22 campaign he took the reins in a caretaker capacity following the dismissal of Poya Asbaghu and it would appear that the club are eager to appoint from within, this making it likely that he will be given the role.
To be fair, such an appointment would hardly get the pulses racing amongst Tykes fans but Devaney would clearly bring an element of stability, something which the club have been lacking in this department for many seasons.
The leading UK bookmakers go odds-on at 4/6 about Devaney taking the reins on a permanent basis while the likes of Darren Moore and Chris Wilder complete the top three in the betting at odds of 3/1 and 4/1 respectively.
4/6 – Martin Devaney
3/1 – Darren Moore
4/1 – Chris Wilder
5/1 – Steve Cotterill
14/1 – Dave Challinor
