Mason Mount Next Club Odds: Manchester United secure Mount’s signature

Update: 06.07.23

Erik ten Hag has added Mason Mount to his squad but the Red Devils boss will need to work out where the midfielder will fit into his system.

Mason Mount became Erik ten Hag’s first summer signing on Wednesday, the Red Devils penning a £60 million deal with Chelsea. The 24-year-old will be raring to go ahead of the new campaign and he has made it very clear where his preferred position would be under his new boss.

Mount said: “I can’t wait to sit down with him and go through things and understand his way of working. I can’t wait to get on that pitch in the next couple of months.

“I have always seen myself as a No.8 that can get forward and attack, create and score goals, but also be able to do the other side of things – defend and help the team when we are under pressure. I know what I can bring to this team, I know the team and the players and what we are capable of achieving.”

Mount spent 18 years with Chelsea and the player’s versatility will clearly be of huge benefit to Erik ten Hag, especially since he has little difficulty playing in either the left or right flanks. During his loan period at Vitesse he bagged as a winger prior to moving into the centre in a midfield trio.

Mount has been a vital part of a narrow front three under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and played largely at No.10 for the Three Lions.

Update: 28.06.23

Manchester United are still attempting to secure the signature of Mason Mount, however the chase has just got much harder for the Red Devils.

Manchester United really are doing their very best to get hold of Mason Mount but they have now had three bids rejected by Chelsea and it is clear that a decade of mismanagement in transfer windows has taken its toll. Indeed, the battle to sign Mason Mount is descending into a farce and sellers Chelsea must surely realise that the £65 that they are asking for the player is far too high, especially since he is heading into the final twelve months of his contract and the club are selling another midfield player for a massive £40 million less.

OK so Mateo Kovacic may be older than Mount and as an English player, the latter’s price is understandably inflated, however Chelsea signed England international Raheem Sterling for a ‘mere’ £47 million last year when he too had around twelve months remaining on his contract.

Clearly a deal worth £55 million is perfectly reasonable given that the player would alternatively walk away on a free in twelve months’ time. Mount has struggled amidst all the chaos at Chelsea but could shine at Old Trafford. Why then have Chelsea turned down this latest bid?

This is simply down to the fact that the Red Devils have routinely paid over the odds in transfer windows for players who are worth nowhere close, such as Fred, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. It is staggering how much money Manchester United have wasted and it’s understandable that Chelsea would chance their arm and see just how much they can take the Red Devils for.

United seem to have learnt their lesson but for now, Chelsea are holding firm and it remains to be seen who blinks first. Mount is still expected to move to Old Trafford this summer at odds as low as 1/4 but at the time of writing, it is very much a waiting game.

Update: 21.06.23

Mason Mount is on the verge of moving away from Stamford Bridge as Manchester United prepare a £96 million bid for the player. With just a year left on his contract with Chelsea, will Mount will lured by the Red Devils and the prospect of Champions League football for 2023/24?

No European football

Having helped Chelsea to a top four finish at the end of the 2020/21  Premier League season, Mason Mount would be facing the prospect of having no European football to look forward to were he to remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of his contract. As such, he has been linked with a move to pastures new with Manchester United priced as huge odds-on favourites to secure his signature during the summer transfer window.

Keen on a move to Old Trafford

Mount is reportedly keen on making a move to Old Trafford before the start of the new campaign, especially since his disappointed by his contract offers from current employers Chelsea. Indeed, while United’s initial £40 million bid was rejected by the West London club last week, a new offer is set to be put on the table and there is every chance that this will be accepted.

Priority signing

Mount is one of Manchester United’s main priority signings this summer and Chelsea’s resolve will be put very much to the test as the Old Trafford outfit increase their offer by a massive £50 million.  United boss Erik ten Hag fully appreciates Mount’s skillset and the fact that Mount is keen on making the move suggests that a deal could soon be secured.

Out of contract

With Mount out of contract in just twelve months and available to move on a free after this point, Chelsea will be eager to offload him before then and the odds on Man United securing his signature this summer have been slashed from 1/3 to a best price of 1/5 over the past few days. He can be backed at best odds of 9/2 to stay at Chelsea after the transfer window while Liverpool are 12/1 to get their hands on the player.

12.06.23

Following a disappointing season for Mason Mount and Chelsea, there has been much debate as to where the England international will be plying his trade in 2023/24 and with just twelve months left on his contract with the Blues, the likelihood is that he will move to Manchester United.

Pivotal role

Mount played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s top four finish to the 2020/21 Premier League campaign with eleven goals along with ten assists throughout the season. He also played a crucial part in the two recent Champions league runs where the Blues won the trophy and made it through to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Massive drop off

Nevertheless, throughout 2022/23 he found the back of the net a mere three times and made just two assists, a massive drop off when compared to the previous season. Discussions regarding his contract with the club may have played a big part in this, as well as the ongoing chaos at Stamford Bridge regarding managerial appointments and signings.

Agreed personal terms

The Blues have put a £70 million valuation on Mason Mount and Manchester United are reportedly very keen on securing his signature this summer. He is said to have agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford outfit and as such, an agreement between the two clubs is all that’s needed in order for a deal to go through.

Suitable move

At the time of writing, the Red Devils are as low as 1/6 (best odds of 1/3) to get their hands on Mount this summer and such a move would see him link up with Three Lions team-mates Luke Shaw, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Indeed, with good friend Declan Rice on the verge of signing for United, a move to Old Trafford would certainly be a suitable move for the two-time Chelsea Player of the Season.
