Harry Maguire Odds: A move from Old Trafford looking unlikely this summer

Update: 02.08.23

The door has been sensationally opened for Harry Maguire to make a return to the Manchester United first-team and it is starting to look as though the former team captain will remain at Old Trafford after the summer transfer window.

Harry Maguire was allegedly axed by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag in order to help the team and the player was left angry and hurt after being sidelined as skipper in favour of Bruno Fernandes. The manager explained the decision by saying: “It’s nothing against Harry, it was in advantage of the team. Then you make the decision.”

Despite giving the 30-year-old a mere eight starts in the Premier League last season, the United boss has challenged Maguire to remain at the club and battle for his place. Clearly that will be easier said than done given that he is behind the likes of Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order for the centre-back places. Luke Shaw was even preferred ahead of Maguire in the back three options.

Maguire has now been shortened in the betting market to stay at Old Trafford after the summer transfer window slams shut. The £80 million England international is now odds-on at a best price of 8/13 to stay put this summer while a move to West Ham United is next in the betting at best odds of 7/4.

Ten Hag said:“I will not say that Harry isn’t part of this group. He has to fight for his position.

“He is a very good centre-back, and I believe in the potential of Harry Maguire. “It’s just that he has to prove himself and fight his way into the team. It’s up to him, and I think he can do it.”

Update: 24.07.23

Tottenham Hotspur are steeping up their interest in Manchester United star Harry Maguire and they will aim to add the player to their squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Harry Maguire could be set for a move to pastures new this summer and while the leading UK betting sites have him priced at a general 7/10 odds-on to remain at Old Trafford into the new season, there is a distinct possibility that he might end up at White Hart lane after the summer transfer window slams shut.

The English international was extremely popular when at Leicester City and in 2019 he moved to Manchester United in a record £85 million deal. He has since made 175 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions with seven goals scored during this time and five assists made along the way. He has enjoyed a number of standout moments although to be fair these have been relatively few and far between. Under Erik ten Hag he has fallen significantly down the pecking order at Old Trafford and under the United’s boss’s preferred playing style he has become something of a liability in the backline.

With the captaincy stripped from him recently and both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane moving way ahead of him in the centre-back roster, the likelihood is that Maguire will be seeking his fortune at another club in 2023/24. One such club could be Tottenham Hotspur who have long been one of the frontrunners to secure the signature of the 30-year-old. New Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is looking to add a centre-back this summer as he revamps his squad ahead of the new campaign.

West Ham United are another leading contender for the signature of Maguire, the Hammers now as low as 11/10 to add him to their books this summer. Chelsea are a best price of 10/1 to sign the player while Everton are as low as 7/1 and as high as 11/1 to secure his signature.

Update: 06.07.23

The 2023/24 Premier League is now around one month away and Manchester United are gearing themselves up for what promises to be a tough campaign. With that in mind, they will be eager to conduct as much business as possible this summer and one of their key departures could be Harry Maguire.

Erik ten Hag is needing to offload players in order to fund his transfers this summer, however Manchester United’s ability to sell Harry Maguire has been made a whole lot harder due to a reported wage increase that the centre back will receive.

With Manchester United having secured a place in next season’s Champions League thanks to their third-placed finish to the season, Maguire has reportedly earned a significant wage increase along with other players in Erik ten Hag’s side. As such, any move to another club this summer would require Maguire to take a pay cut and clearly that’s not going to sit too well with the player.

Maguire remains a key part of the Three lions squad and while West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur have been showing interest, he faces his own difficult decision as to whether he would be better off staying at Old Trafford this summer.

At the time of writing, Maguire is a best price of 5/4 to stay at Manchester United although some bookies go as low as 2/5 in the market. Tottenham Hotspur are a general 4/1 to secure Maguire’s signature while Aston Villa, West Ham United and Newcastle United come in next at 6/1, 14/1 and 14/1 respectively.

Update: 26.06.23

Manchester United are gearing themselves up for the 2023/24 campaign and as such, they will be embarking on a busy transfer window with a batch of new signings as well as several moves in the opposite direction.

Business slow

Manchester United supporters want their club to offload thirteen players during the summer but thus far business has been slow for the Red Devils as they look set to end another June without any new arrivals at Old Trafford. Main rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have wasted little time in adding reinforcements while Erik ten Hag is still awaiting his first new recruit of the summer transfer window.

Most likely to leave

Of the potential departures from Old Trafford, Harry Maguire seems the most likely to leave with a mere 11.1% of United supporters being of the opinion that he should stay with the club. Over the past few weeks, numerous clubs have been linked with Maguire including AS Roma, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus, the England international finding himself very much out of favour at Manchester United having been dropped down to fifth choice centre-back.

Most likely destination

The former Leicester City player is just 2/1 (best odds 9/4) to remain at Old Trafford for next season but in the event of him leaving for pastures new, Tottenham Hotspur are deemed the club most likely to secure his signature at best odds of 4/1 (lowest price 6/4). Other possible destinations for the 30-year-old include Aston Villa (best odds 13/2, worst odds 3/1) and Newcastle United (best odds 10/1, worst odds 6/1).

As we edge ever closer to the start of the summer transfer window, there are suggestions that Manchester United captain Harry Maguire might be set for a move to pastures new. If that is the case, then where will he end up?

Infrequently used

Harry Maguire may well be club captain at Manchester United but he wasn’t been used frequently throughout the 2022/23 Premier League campaign with just seven starts to his name. The likelihood is that he out of Erik ten Hag’s preferred line-up for the new season in favour of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane. Where then does that leave him with regard to his options?

Strengthen at centre-back

As things stand, Tottenham Hotspur appear to be the side deemed most likely to secure the signature of Maguire during the summer transfer window. New Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou will be looking to strengthen at centre-back before the start of the 2023/24 campaign and with Maguire struggling for game time under Ten Hag, such a move would be beneficial to the player.

Forced away from Old Trafford

Some believe that far from wanting to leave Old Trafford, Maguire is being forced away from the club and reports suggest that he would prefer to stay with the Red Devils. Ten Hag apparently wants to cash in on the Three Lions man but some bookmakers go as low as 3/2 that he remains with the club at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Main contenders to sign Maguire

Should he leave Old Trafford, Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to secure his signature at general odds of 2/1 while he is a 5/2 shot to move to Aston Villa this summer (best odds of 6/1). Newcastle United are a shortest price of 6/1 and best odds of 10/1 to lure Maguire to St James’ Park while West Ham United are as low as 6/1 (and as high as 18/1) to sign him.

01.06.23

The Red Devils have been linked with Ajax defender Jurrien Timber as well as Napoli’s Kim Min-Jae, therefore there is every possibility that Maguire might be offloaded in favour of more capable defenders to reflect Ten Hag’s preferred style of play.

In the event that Maguire does indeed move elsewhere, who are the main contenders to secure his signature?

Aston Villa – 8/1

Unai Emery has managed to lift Aston Villa from a bottom-half-of-the-table outfit to a Europa Conference League participant during his time at Villa Park. While Villa an established partnership consisting of Tyrone Mings and Esri Konsa who made 34 and 35 starts respectively in the league during 2022/23, the club may well be keen to secure the signature of Maguire now that they will also be battling on the European front.

Newcastle United – 10/1

Newcastle United will be dining at the top table of the European game next season and they are second favourites to land the signature of Maguire this summer. Eddie Howe has helped turn the Magpies into one of the top teams in the Premier League and while, like Villa, they have an established duo in Sven Botman and Fabian Schar who had 34 and 35 starts respectively in the league throughout 2022/23, Maguire could provide Howe with a back-up option for what promises to be a demanding campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur – 12/1

The 2022/23 campaign was one to forget for Tottenham Hotspur who failed to make it into European competition after finishing a disappointing 8th in the final league table. Spurs have been struggling in defence of late with a total of 63 goals conceded throughout 2022/23 and Maguire could be seen as a solid option in which to help shore up the defence.
