Freiburg v West Ham United Match Preview & Best Odds

Kick-off 5:45pm UK Time, Thursday 5th October 2023

West Ham United edged past Backa Topola in their opening Europa League outing last month and they will seek to overcome Freiburg in their second group match on Thursday evening.

Many of the top Premier League sides have been a mixed bag in domestic competition this season, however West Ham’s start to the campaign cannot really be criticised either in Europe or on home shores. The Hammers’ only defeats since the start of 2023/24 have been against Liverpool and defending Premier League champions Manchester City, the East London outfit triumphing in each of their other six games across competitions since 20th August.

This has all come about at a time when David Moyes’ side has been in a transitional period, any vulnerability only really becoming apparent when they found themselves a goal behind against Backa Topola in their Europa League opener last month, a game which they ultimately won 3-1. Since then, West Ham have returned wins over Lincoln City and Sheffield United with clean sheets in each of these matches and confidence will be high ahead of their trip to Germany on Thursday evening.

Freiburg came very close to securing Champions League football at the end of last season but so far this term they have been far from impressive, no less than eleven goals being leaked in four games across competitions last month. The Bundesliga side managed an excellent 3-2 win over Olympiacos in their Europa League opener and they head into this match on the back of a 2-0 victory over Augsburg on Sunday.

The home side have been far from impressive in domestic competition this season but they certainly have enough quality within their ranks to make a decent impression in the Europa League. The Hammers are marginal favourites for the win here but we envisage the hosts doing just enough to earn for themselves a share of the spoils in what has the makings of a thoroughly entertaining tussle.
