Brighton’s Europa League opener on Thursday evening didn’t go as planned with the south-coast side losing at home to AEK Athens, however Roberto De Zerbi will be confident that his side can bounce back by taking all three points from their weekend meeting with AFC Bournemouth.
Kick-off: 2pm, Sunday 24th September 2023
Brighton & Hove Albion were given something of a rude awakening in their opening Europa League match after being beaten 3-2 at home to AEK Athens. Nevertheless this was a historic occasion for the Seagulls who just 26 years ago were facing complete extinction as a club and it’s fair to say that they didn’t disgrace themselves in their first ever Europa League outing.
Indeed, a third straight win in the Premier League would be the perfect response to this European disappointment and with the side having already got the better of Newcastle United and Manchester United – each by a 3-1 scoreline – there’s every reason to believe that they can brush aside the Cherries on Sunday afternoon. Indeed, not even free-scoring Spurs or current league leaders and defending champions Manchester City can hold a candle to the Seagulls’ league-high total of fifteen goals this term and as things stand the south-coast outfit sit in fifth position in the early Premier League table.
Nevertheless, Brighton haven’t managed a single clean sheet in any competition this season and no shut-outs have been achieved since they beat Arsenal to the tune of 3-0 in May. That said, they haven’t been kept at bay at the Amex Stadium since February and this certainly bodes well against a Bournemouth side which have found the back of the net just four times in their five league outings.
Bournemouth’s 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea on Sunday was far more entertaining than the scoreline might suggest but it leaves manager Andoni Iraola still searching for his first league win since taking the reins at the south-coast outfit. The Cherries did at least give a decent account of themselves against a Blues side which took the European crown in 2021 however and the 2-2 draw with Brentford in their previous match can also be viewed upon in a somewhat positive light.
Nevertheless Bournemouth are still fighting at the lower end of the Premier League table and are one of only five teams still in search of their first league win of the campaign, the others being Everton, Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United. The front-footed Cherries can still make life hard for Brighton this weekend but we envisage the Seagulls more than making up for their defensive shortcomings by giving a scintillating display at the opposite end of the field.
