High-flying Aston Villa entertain struggling Premier League rivals Crystal Palace at Villa Park in the last sixteen round of this season’s Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

Top of the Champions League table

Aston Villa fans would’ve hardly dared believe that their side would be sitting proudly at the summit of the new-format 36-team Champions League table after three rounds of fixtures, however that’s exactly where the West Midlands side are sitting following wins over BSC Young Boys (0-3), Bayern Munich (1-0) and most recently Bologna (2-0). Unai Emery’s men are also flying high in the Premier League table, their five wins sending them into fourth position, level on points with third-placed Arsenal and behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

Gut-wrenching

A third-round Carabao Cup meeting with Wycombe Wanderers wasn’t expected to provide Villa with any serious threat although in fairness the Premier League side made harder work of booking their spot in the last sixteen than they really needed to. A 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last time out – a match in which the Cherries scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time – was somewhat gut-wrenching for the home side but it did extend their unbeaten run across competitions to eleven games.

Disappointing form

As Aston Villa continue to battle at the top end of the Premier League, Crystal Palace’s lowly place at the opposite end of the division has come on the back of some disappointing form. A 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur was enough to lift the Eagles out of the drop zone for the time being but they will nevertheless welcome the chance to put their league concerns to one side for a while.

Winless run

Palace haven’t made it into the last sixteen of the Carabao Cup since 2018/19 and they haven’t been past this point of the tournament since 2011/12 when they lost in the semi-finals to Cardiff City. Palace have also failed to win any of their last seven trips to Villa Park with defeats in four of the last five and there’s little to suggest that they will put this winless run in the West Midlands to an end here.

Penalties

Nevertheless, with no European football to take into account, Glasner can go strong in this match, just as he did in the third round against QPR, while Villa certainly don’t have that option. Palace will also be buoyed by their weekend win over Spurs and we envisage them taking the home side to penalties in this one, Villa having our backing to edge their way to success in the shootout.

Back Aston Villa to win after penalties at best odds of 5/1
