The 5-0 thrashing by Tottenham Hotspur proved to be the final straw for the Southampton board and they subsequently sacked boss Russell Martin, interim manager Simon Rusk in the hot-seat for the midweek Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool at St Mary’s.

Uphill task

St Mary’s Stadium witnessed a mass exodus on Sunday evening with Southampton three goals in arrears in the opening 14 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur and five behind at the break. The fans had clearly had enough and calls for the manager to be sacked were soon answered. The Saints are now four points adrift at the foot of the Premier League table and nine points away from safety after sixteen rounds of fixtures, the only positive from what has thus far been a disappointing season being a fine run in the Carabao Cup. Having gone out to Gillingham in the first round of the tournament last season, Southampton have hauled themselves into the last eight this time around but they will face an enormous uphill task on Wednesday evening when they come up against 10-time League Cup winners and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Heavily rotated

Jurgen Klopp took the Reds to two of the last three Carabao Cups and new boss Arne Slot will seek to continue in a similar fashion, the Dutchman having breezed through the tournament despite being up against top-flight opposition.  A heavily rotated Liverpool brushed aside West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion in the earlier rounds of the competition and while they have been forced to share the spoils in each of their last two Premier League outings, we don’t envisage the Reds failing in this midweek cup clash.

Too hot to handle

The chances are that Slot will once again make a few changes for this midweek outing but despite this, Liverpool will certainly prove too hot to handle for the home side. Indeed, we expect a shed-load of goals here and with five scored in last month’s league meeting, we’ll be siding with both sides adding to the scoresheet in what has the makings of a thoroughly entertaining affair.

Back Liverpool to win 3-1 at best odds of 9/1
