La Liga Odds: Who will win the battle for the Spanish title?

At this late stage of the campaign, we haven’t seen four teams this close in the battle for the La Liga title in nearly five decades and the big question is, who will come out on top?

There are just a few games left in the 2020/21 La Liga campaign and four sides are contending to become Spanish champions. Following a shake-up in the market during the weekend, Barcelona are best odds of 8/15 to make a comeback and clinch the title, while out-of-form Atletico Madrid are 10/3 to remain in their table-topping position at the close of play. Real Madrid and Sevilla can be backed at odds of 9/1 and 33/1 respectively.

Barcelona grabbed themselves a vital three points at the weekend, Antoine Griezmann scoring twice as the Catalans moved to within two points of leaders Atletico and level with arch-rivals Real. Barca have also played one game less than the top two in the division and victory in this would lift them one point clear in pole position.

Closing the gap

Ronald Koeman’s men have been enjoying some excellent form of late and the bookies have reacted by continually slashing the odds on them finishing at the top of the pile. Indeed at the end of January, Barca were a whopping fourteen points adrift of Atletico and at that point they could be backed at 10/1 for title success. Lionel Messi has been key to Barcelona’s upturn in fortunes, the Argentinian banging in an astonishing fourteen goals in thirteen league appearances.

Atletico Madrid have seen their big lead fall away in what really has been a season of two halves. Only a few months ago they looked to have the title sewn up and the bookies had them chalked in as 1/2 favourites to go all the way. Since then their lead has been clawed away at and their defeat to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend was indicative of their demise.

Real Madrid also saw their title ambitions suffer a setback at the weekend when they were held to a goal-less draw by Real Betis and on the back of this the odds on them finishing the season in pole position have lengthened from 2/1 to a general 9/1.

Surprising Sevilla

The big story of the 2020/21 campaign has been the rise of Sevilla. They have defied all expectations and placed themselves in an excellent position to take advantage of any slip-ups by the big three in the coming weeks. They arguably have the best form of all the sides in the top four and having won their last five La Liga outings, they can be backed as short as 16/1.

All four title hopefuls will face stern tests in the weeks ahead with no side having a favourable run-in and we can be sure of some thrills and spills as they all battle it out for top domestic honours.
