Manchester United v Crystal Palace Match Preview & Best Odds

Manchester United will be looking to make it through to the fourth round of this season’s League Cup when they entertain Premier League rivals Crystal Palace at the Theatre of Dreams this evening.

Having lost by the odd goal in a seven-goal thriller against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week, Manchester United were very much in need of a boost and they got it – albeit in unconvincing style – when winning 1-0 at Burnley last weekend. This was the Red Devils’ first Premier League win in three attempts, the side having lost 3-1 to Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion in each of their previous domestic outings. Indeed, Erik ten Hag’s men have won just three of their opening six Premier League games this season with three league defeats during this time and as things stand they sit in 9th position in the table, one position and just a single point above tonight’s League Cup opponents Crystal Palace.

Tonight’s meeting with Crystal Palace will be the first of two games between the sides in the space of just a few days, the Eagles heading to Old Trafford for a Premier League clash at the weekend. Ten Hag’s men will then lock horns with Galatasaray in the Champions League next week before facing Brentford on home soil in their final outing before the international break. There would certainly be a completely different mood at Old Trafford if United were able to return four wins from their next four outings.

While Manchester United are the current holders of the League Cup, Crystal Palace have never before won the trophy, their best showings in the competition coming in seasons 1989/90 and 2015/16 when they lost on both occasions to Manchester United in the final. Palace have thus far been a mixed bag in the Premier League with two wins, two defeats and two draws from their opening six games and as things stand they sit in tenth position in the league table. Their last outing ended in a goal-less stalemate with Fulham and they are now up against the Red Devils twice in quick succession.

The managers of both Crystal Palace and Man United will almost certainly make a few changes for this match and we envisage this being a closely fought encounter, however United’s victory over Burnley was extremely important and there will be a different feel around the club right now. For this reason, we’ll be siding with the Red Devils to edge their way into the fourth round of the League Cup with a win over the Eagles at Old Trafford this evening.
