Losing run ended
Newcastle United ended a three-game losing run when beating Brentford in their last outing and they will be confident of getting their 2023/24 Champions League campaign off to a flying start when they face an AC Milan side which lost 5-1 to arch-rivals Inter Milan last time out. That said, AC Milan have suffered just a single defeat from their last thirteen home games (they were the ‘away’ side at the San Siro against Inter) and they won their three matches prior to their weekend humbling.
Mixed bag
Newcastle United have been a mixed bag this season, a narrow defeat away to defending Premier League champions Manchester City hardly a disastrous result. Nevertheless, with the side letting slip a one-goal lead against ten-man Liverpool and losing comprehensively to Brighton & Hove Albion, there have been some murmurings of discontent from the Magpies support. This will be Newcastle’s first Champions League outing since 2003 and they face some tricky outings ahead against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
Defensive mishaps
Milan only just scraped into the group stages of the Champions League thanks to Juventus receiving a ten-point deduction, however the home side are favourites to get their European campaign off to a winning start. Newcastle have been susceptible to defensive mishaps this season and while we envisage Eddie Howe’s men giving a decent account of themselves tonight, we’ll be backing the hosts to collect the valuable three points.
