Liverpool sit on top of Europa League Group E after just one round of group games and they will look to make it two wins on the bounce in the tournament when they welcome Union SG to Anfield on Thursday evening.
Liverpool saw their seventeen-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League come to an abrupt and controversial end when they went down 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last weekend. Indeed this was their first defeat across competitions since 1st April and the controversy surrounded a Luis Diaz goal being wrongly disallowed just a few minutes after Curtis Jones was sent off for a late tackle. Jurgen Klopp’s side then found themselves down to nine men with Diogo Jota receiving a second yellow card before Joel Matip banged a corner into his own net six minutes into stoppage time.
Klopp was vocal in his criticism of the match officials and he has vowed to ‘resolve the matter’, although what this entails remains to be seen. Either way, the Reds have slipped down to fourth in the Premier League table and frustration will still be high when Union SG come to town on Thursday evening. This is Liverpool’s first ever meeting with their opponents and they will certainly be looking forward to putting their weekend disappointment firmly behind them. The Reds have triumphed in 15 of their last 21 home games in the Europa League and they are big favourites to secure a maximum points haul here.
This is the second successive season that Union SG have appeared in the group stages of the Europa League and they got things off to a decent start by taking a point from their home meeting with Toulouse in their tournament opener. Since then, the visitors have won three on the bounce in the Belgian top-flight and they sit at the summit of the table after six rounds of fixtures. In their debut Europa League campaign in 2022/23, Union SG made it all the way through to the last eight of the competition but it seems unlikely that they will finish above Liverpool at the end of the group stages.
Union’s solid form on the road bodes well for their trip to Merseyside and they will certainly fancy their chances of causing something of an upset at Anfield given that the home side have conceded in all-but-one of their last eleven competitive outings. Nevertheless, Klopp’s side will have far too much quality for the visitors even if the Reds boss decides to rest some key players and we envisage the hosts maintaining their perfect start by claiming maximum points in this one.
