Aston Villa v Zrinjski Mostar Match Preview & Best Odds

Kick-off: 8pm UK Time, Thursday 5th October 2023

Aston Villa will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Legia Warszawa in their Europa Conference League opener when they entertain Zrinjski Mostar in their second outing in the competition on Thursday evening.

Aston Villa thumped Hibernian to the tune of 8-0 in the playoff round of this season’s Europa Conference League and their fans could have been forgiven for thinking that following West Ham United’s path to the trophy would be a walk in the park, especially with European competition specialist Unai Emery at the helm. Nevertheless, the Villa boss looked crestfallen following the defeat to Legia Warszawa in the opening group game last month and after losing their first European group stage outing in 15 years, the West Midlands outfit can’t afford to slip-up on Thursday evening.

Since taking the reins at Aston Villa almost twelve months ago, Emery has been looking to make Villa Park something of a fortress and following their 6-1 demolition of high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, Villa still enjoy a perfect home record in the Premier League this term. Nevertheless inconsistency has been prevalent for the Villans, the thrashing of the Seagulls coming hot on the heels of a 2-1 home defeat to Everton in the League Cup which itself followed on from a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

With Villa’s last eleven games across competitions yielding 45 goals and visitors Zrinjski Mostar scoring 12 in their last four, the likelihood is that both nets will be bulging on Thursday evening. The visitors are the first Bosnian side to have reached the group stages of any UEFA competition and they impressed when overturning a three-goal deficit to beat AZ Alkmaar 4-3 in their tournament opener last month.

This has the makings of a goal-laden encounter and the visitors can certainly pose a big threat to free-scoring Villa here, the home side likely to make a few changes for this encounter. On home turf however, Villa have been a tough nut to crack – aside from their League Cup defeat by the Toffees – and we envisage them edging their way to three points on Thursday evening.
