Who are the favourites to win Euro 2024?

Update: 03.07.24

The quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championships get underway this weekend and with just eight sides left in the tournament, Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions remain the favourites to become European champions for the very first time.

It’s fair to say that England should be performing far better than they should be, especially so given the talent that they have in the ranks. Maybe Gareth Southgate will pull something out of the bag on Saturday evening and his men will demolish the Swiss in thoroughly convincing fashion. Then again, there’s every chance that they will put in a similar lacklustre and apparently uninterested display to that which saw them snatch an unlikely late equaliser and extra-time winning goal against Slovakia last time out. This has been a tactically inept England thus far and Southgate has been – rightly or wrongly – blamed for some extremely poor performances. Nevertheless, the Three Lions are through to the last eight of the tournament and are priced as favourites, mainly down to the fact that their pairing with Switzerland is being seen as one of the preferable ties.

Nevertheless, Switzerland have proven themselves to be thoroughly deserving of their place in the quarter-finals and while England are priced as favourites to lift the trophy, the Swiss are more than capable of dumping them out of the competition. Can England go all the way in Euro 2024? Definitely not should they continue to perform the way they are. Against the bigger sides in the competition (and this should include Switzerland), they will likely get torn apart. Nevertheless, they are still billed as favourites at a best price of 4/1 and there’s a chance that Southgate might come up with some ideas ahead of the weekend. Or perhaps he won’t!

Update: 01.07.24

We’re now very much at the business end of the 2024 European Football Championships and Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions have somehow made it into the last eight of the competition thanks to some lucky heroics against Slovakia last night.

The media are making much about the fact that England are the side that every other team wants to face right now, and on last night’s performance against Slovakia last night, it’s not hard to see why. Nevertheless, despite being less than two minutes away from elimination, the Three Lions have found themselves in the quarter-finals where they will lock horns with a Switzerland outfit which dumped defending champions Italy out of the tournament. Not only that but, despite failing to impress in any of their four games thus far, England remain favourites to lift the trophy and be crowned European champions.

In fairness, the Three Lions have seemed disjointed and very much devoid of ideas thus far. There is genuine quality in the ranks and there can be no doubt that this is a side which doesn’t need to ride their luck as much as they have been. Had it not been for a Jude Bellingham bicycle kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time, England would have been out of Euro 2024 and the fallout would have been massive.

Southgate has been hailed by some as England’s best manager in a generation and it is true that he has taken the side to their first major international final since 1966, however in the Euro 2020 final they were beaten by a poor Italy side and tactical ineptitude played a big part in their failure.

Update: 27.06.24

We’re now through to the last sixteen of the 2024 European Football Championships and despite underwhelming in the group stages of the tournament, England remain favourites to be crowned European champions for the first time ever.

Increased pressure

Gareth Southgate has been coming under increased pressure on the back of some thoroughly underwhelming performance in Group C, however the Three Lions are through to the last sixteen of the competition and are favourites to lift the trophy. Southgate’s men opened their account with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Serbia in their first outing and this was followed by back-to-back draws with Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0), the latter making it past the group stages of the tournament for the first time ever on the back of this goal-less stalemate.

Maximum points haul

The leading UK bookmakers go a best price of 4/1 on the Three Lions going one better than three years ago (Euro 2020) and being crowned European, while Spain sit second in the betting at 9/2. The Spaniards are the only side to collect a maximum points haul from their three group games, wins coming against Croatia (3-0), Italy (1-0) and Albania (1-0). Spain have been European champions on three previous occasions with their most recent success coming in 2012 when they thrashed Italy 4-0 in the final, a successful defence of the trophy which they also won four years previously.

Group winners

Host nation Germany are third in the betting to be crowned European champions at a best price of 6/1. Winners of the competition three times (twice as West Germany and once since reunification), Germany collected seven points from their three Group A games and go into the last sixteen as group winners. Beaten 2016 finalists France are next in the betting at best odds of 13/2 to be crowned European champions for the third time (1984 and 2000 being their previous successes in the tournament) while Portugal are a 15/2 shot to go all the way in the competition and emulate their success of 2016.

Update: 20.06.24

The 2024 European Football Championships are now underway and we take a look at the countries deemed most likely to win the tournament and be crowned European champions.

Positive starts

All 24 nations competing in the 2024 European Championships have now started their respective bids for continental glory and thus far there have been goals galore and a few surprises along the way. All of the tournament favourites got things off to a positive start with wins for England, Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands and hosts Germany, while the surprise victors in the opening round were Slovakia and Romania.

Knockout stages

Germany became the first side to make it through to the knockout stages of the tournament when they followed up their 5-1 demolition of Scotland by brushing aside Hungary to the tune of 2-0 in their second outing. Should Germany avoid defeat in their final group match with Switzerland, then they will guarantee themselves pole position in Group A. The Swiss need a draw to assure themselves of a place in the top two while Scotland can haul themselves up to second place should they beat Hungary on Sunday.

Joint favourites

England lead the way in their group thanks to their unconvincing win over Serbia, while Slovenia and Denmark sit two points behind after sharing the spoils with each other in their tournament opener. The Three Lions remain joint favourites to win the tournament at a best price of 4/1 (lowest odds 7/2) alongside France, and they will guarantee for themselves a place in the last sixteen should they beat Denmark tonight.

Well placed

In Group B, both Italy and Spain are well placed to progress ahead of their meeting with each other tonight while both France and Netherlands are also looking good on the back of their respective opening wins.

Update: 17.06.24

Euro 2024 got started with a 5-1 thrashing for Scotland by hosts Germany while England managed a hard-earned three points courtesy of their 1-0 win over Serbia.

5-1 humiliation for the Scots

There have been few surprises thus far in the 2024 European Football Championships although there have been some thrilling encounters since the start of the competition. Hosts Germany were always expected to get the better of Scotland in the tournament curtain-raiser and so it proved, the Tartan Army witnessing their side being torn to shreds in a 5-1 humiliation at the Allianz Arena on Friday evening.

Positive result for England

England enjoyed an altogether more positive result although the performance of Gareth Southgate’s men left a lot to be desired, especially after the break. Jude Bellingham got his name onto the scoresheet in the first half and Harry Kane saw his shot deflected off the bar, however these were the only real positives to take from England’s showing and Southgate will (hopefully) be demanding more from his players as the competition progresses.

Rock bottom

As things stand, England sit in pole position in A with three points collected from their opening match, Denmark and Slovenia sharing the spoils in the other group game. Scotland meanwhile, sit rock bottom of Group A following their demolition on Friday evening and the bookmakers go a best price of 500/1 on them winning the tournament and 9/4 to qualify from their group.

06.06.24

Anticipation building

The anticipation is building ahead of what promises to be a thrilling and thoroughly entertain Euro 2024 tournament, hosts Germany launching the affair when they host Scotland at 8pm on 14th June in the Allianz Arena, Munich. The last of the pre-tournament friendlies will conclude by the middle of next week and we can then look forward to over four weeks of exciting football action.

24 nations taking part

A total of 24 countries will take part in Euro 2024 and these will be placed into six groups. England have been grouped with Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia while other home nation, Scotland, have been placed alongside Switzerland, Hungary and hosts Germany.

Bring football home

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions finished runners-up in the last European Championships three years ago but they are 3/1 favourites to go one better this time around and become European champions for the first time ever. Indeed, England are without a major international trophy in 57 years and this is an excellent opportunity for them to put things right and ‘bring football home’.

Main contenders

Second favourites to taste success in the competition are France who will be led by skipper Kylian Mbappe, the leading UK and Irish betting sites going best Euro 2024 odds of 4/1 on a side who have won the competition twice. Germany are next in the betting at 11/2 and victory for the hosts would be their fourth European Championships crown (twice as West Germany and once since unification). Spain also have three wins to their name and they are a general 8/1 shot for the trophy, the same price as neighbours Portugal who overcame France in the 2016 to secure their one and only championship.
