Leeds United favourites to join Southampton in Championship

Update: 25.03.23

After 37 rounds of Premier League games, it comes down to the very last day of the season to find out who will be dropping down into the Championship with Southampton.

Everton, Leeds United and Leicester City are all very much in danger of being relegated to the Championship after what has undeniably been a poor campaign for all three teams. Each of these sides has experienced a change in manager at some point this season, while Leeds United have done this twice as they desperately seek to turn things around.

Southampton have already had their relegation confirmed and two of the above sides will be joining them this weekend. Each of the remaining three sides involved in this relegation battle will play on home soil on the closing day of the campaign and fans will be on the edges of their seats.

Leeds United – 1/33

Leeds United are deemed the side most likely to join Southampton in the second tier and given that their goal difference is worse than Everton’s, there is a chance that even a win this weekend wouldn’t be enough to save them. Leeds are up against a Spurs side which thumped them 4-0 in the same fixture in 2021/22 and the North Londoners will be desperate for a win which could lead to European football next season.

Leicester City – 1/7

Leicester City famously pulled off one of the biggest ever underdog stories in Premier League history when winning the title in 2016. The Foxes find themselves in a very different battle this term although they will avoid the drop if they win their final game and Everton fail to win. Nevertheless, anything but victory will see the Foxes in the second tier for the 2023/24 campaign.

Everton – 16/5

Everton are deemed the side most likely to stay in the Premier League and victory over AFC Bournemouth will confirm their participation in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. The Toffees have endured a turbulent couple of seasons but the chances of them avoiding the drop are looking good. Indeed, Everton will stay up even if they lose this weekend should both Leeds and Leicester fail to collect maximum points.

Leicester City are struggling in the lower echelons of the Premier League table and with just two league games left to play, time is fast running out for the Foxes as they desperately bid to escape the drop.

Dreadful Campaign

Southampton have already dropped down to the Championship and as the end of the 2022/23 campaign edges ever closer, Leicester City are the side deemed most likely to join the Saints in the second tier. The Foxes have had a dreadful campaign with just eight wins from their thirty-six Premier League outings and twenty-two defeats during that time. They currently sit second from bottom of the league table with two games left to play and having waved goodbye to manager Brendan Rodgers, it is now up to interim boss Dean Smith to steer the side to safety.

Unenviable Task

His task is an unenviable one, Leicester having leaked no less than eight goals in their last two matches. Indeed, the East Midlands side have won just one of their last fifteen matches across competitions and they will come up against high-flying top-four hopefuls Newcastle United on Monday, before doing battle with a West Ham United side which are effectively safe from the drop.

Favourites for the Drop

Now that’s Southampton’s relegation has been confirmed, Leicester City are firm favourites for the drop this term at odds as low as 1/9 (best odds 1/7), while third-from-bottom side Leeds United are a general 4/11 shot for relegation to the Championship. Nottingham Forest are next in the betting at 11/4 while Everton are out at 7/2 despite losing 3-0 at home to Manchester City last time out.
