RB Leipzig v Manchester City Match Preview & Best Odds

Kick-off 8pm UK Time, Wednesday 4th October 2023

Defending European champions Manchester City will be aiming to bounce back from two successive domestic defeats when they face RB Leipzig in their second Champions League outing on Wednesday evening.

Having been dumped out of the League Cup courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United last week, Manchester City lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, this being the first time since January last season that Pep Guardiola’s side have suffered two back-to-back defeats across competitions.

Indeed, prior to this spell, City had lost just two of their previous 41 games and having gone behind four times in their last five matches, a small chink in the side’s armour has been exposed. Guardiola’s men really cannot afford another slow start should they wish to return to winning ways this week against a Leipzig side which have been enjoying some excellent form of late.

The likelihood of City enduring a third straight defeat looks remote given their impressive form in Europe’s top tier club competition, their unbeaten run in the tournament being extended to fourteen matches thanks to their win – after coming from behind – against Red Star in their opening Champions League group game.

Leipzig found themselves two goals ahead in their encounter with Bayern Munich last weekend although the Bavarian giants rescued a point with a 2-2 draw, Harry Kane and Leroy Sane coming to their rescue and ending Leipzig’s four-game winning run in the Bundesliga. Leipzig have won twelve and drawn three of their last seventeen outings on home soil across competitions and they will be in no mood to see this excellent home form come to an end on Wednesday evening.

In the last-sixteen of the 2022/23 Champions League, Leipzig lost 8-1 on aggregate to Manchester City although we envisage a much closer affair this time around. The home side will fancy their chances of breaking City’s backline here but the visitors will be boosted by the return of Rodri and we envisage Pep Guardiola’s side edging their way to another three points, especially if Haaland decides to weigh in on the action.
