French champions Paris Saint Germain visit Tyneside on Wednesday evening for what has all the makings of being a thrilling Champions League encounter with Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side got their Champions League campaign off to a solid start when drawing 1-1 with AC Milan at the San Siro last month and they will look to go one better when they entertain Paris Saint Germain at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening. This was a decent start for the Magpies as they ended their two-decade-long exile from Europe’s top tier club competition and they certainly weren’t fazed by the intimidating atmosphere inside the San Siro as they took the game to the home side.

Stand-in Milan keeper Marco Sportiello had to be very much on alert to prevent Newcastle United from claiming a maximum points haul at the eleventh hour and since taking a point home from Italy, the Magpies have been resilient at the back with no goals conceded in their subsequent three outings across competitions. Indeed, the Tyneside outfit have enjoyed some excellent form of late with eleven goals scored in 270 minutes of  football, including eight without reply against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and one against European champions Manchester City who they dumped out of the League Cup last week. Burnley fell to the Magpies last weekend in what was a relatively one-sided affair and Howe will be confident of edging past the visitors in this midweek European clash.

PSG enjoyed a winning start to their European campaign when beating Borussia Dortmund to the tune of 2-0 in their tournament opener although they have dropped points in four of their opening seven Ligue 1 games thus far. Currently sitting in fifth place in their domestic league, PSG have – like the Magpies – been resilient on the defensive front with clean sheets kept in three back-to-back outings and they have avoided defeat in nine successive matches on the road.

Both PSG and Newcastle United have been resilient in defence of late but the home side will fear no team after dumping Manchester City out of the League Cup. They intimidating St James’ Park atmosphere will also likely play a part here and while it will be a tough task keeping Mbappe and co quiet on Wednesday evening, we envisage Newcastle edging their way to a hard-earned three points in this one, despite Howe needing to adjust for injuries.
