Kick-off: 8.15pm UK Time, Wednesday 6th December 2023

Manchester United’s woes continued at the weekend when they lost 1-0 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park and they will be in for another tough test when they entertain Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Manchester United have been struggling with numerous injury absentees this season and this could have been a factor in their narrow defeat on Tyneside at the weekend, however Newcastle United have also been ravaged by injuries and had little option but to look to the academy ranks to fill the numbers on the bench. Indeed, Eddie Howe’s decimated side appeared to be a country mile above the visitors who were clearly second best throughout and the 1-0 win for the hosts was hardly a reflection of how poor the Red Devils were in what was a freezing evening in the North East.

Erik ten Hag’s men now sit in seventh position in the Premier League table with by far the worst goal-scoring record of any side in the top half of the table. The Red Devils have found the net sixteen times whilst on Premier League duty this season, nine less than midweek opponents Chelsea have. Eight of these goals have been scored at Old Trafford however and the chances are they will add to the scoreline on Wednesday evening.

Enzo Fernandez scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at home to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out and this was a perfect response to the side’s 4-1 drubbing on Tyneside a week earlier. The Blues have been very much in amongst the goals of late with twelve goals scored in their last four games and eleven conceded during that time, therefore there’s every chance that we’ll see a few goals here. Prior to their demolition at St James’ Park, the West London side had won three on the bounce away from home in the league and there likelihood is that they will take something from their trip to the North West.

Man United have been struggling in the final third for much of the season but it’s fair to say that they are rarely ripped apart at the back. As for Chelsea, it’s generally difficult to know quite what to expect from Pochettino’s side and while we would be surprised were both teams not to find the back of the net, it’s hard to pick a clear winner here and instead we’ll be siding with things being all-square at the final whistle.

Back a draw and both teams to score at best odds of 7/2
