How will Luton Town fare in 2024/25

Update: 04.07.24

After finishing in third place in the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season, Luton Town made it through the play-offs and into the Premier League. Nevertheless, they dropped straight back down at the first time of asking and their main aim next term will be to make an immediate return to the top-flight.

Sizeable gap

Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town all won promotion to the Premier League at the end of 2022/23 and all three dropped straight back down at the end of the following season. The gap between the top two divisions in English football is a sizeable one and this is made clear every season when newly-promoted sides struggle to find their feet in the top-flight.

Brave struggle

Indeed, after a brave struggle, Luton Town’s first ever season in the Premier League ended in disappointment when they finished third from bottom, only Burnley and Sheffield United sitting below them in the league table. The Hatters managed a mere six wins from their 38 league outings along with eight draws and this wasn’t enough to extend their stay in the top-flight to more than a single season.

Right man for the job

Despite dropping straight back down to the Championship, there has never been any suggestion that Rob Edwards isn’t still the man to take the team forward and the sole remit for the Hatters boss will be to steer his side back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Luton are one of the favourites to win the Championship at the end of 2024/25 at a best price of 12/1 (lowest odds 9/1) while they are best odds of 4/1 to win promotion, whether automatically or via the play-offs again.

Season in the sun

Luton’s narrow pitch suits their playing style and Kenilworth Road will be a tough place for visiting teams, however all things considered we envisage Rob Edwards’ men being forced to once again endure the drama of the Championship play-offs as they look to claw their way to another season in the sun.

Luton Town 2024/25 Best Betting Odds

13/8 –  Top Six Finish

4/1  –  Promotion to Premier League

16/1 –  Relegation to League One

Update: 15.08.23

Luton Town were given a taste of what life in the Premier League will be like when they demolished 4-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion in their first outing of the new season.

Tough task

Luton Town were always expected to struggle this season and they got a taste of how tough the campaign is likely to be when they were thumped by Brighton on Saturday afternoon. It’s clearly early days though and this hammering in no way indicates that the hatters will be cannon fodder for the entire season, however it illustrates just what a tough task it will for the side to keep their heads above water.

First home game

Luton’s atmospheric Kenilworth Road ground will certainly be an intimidating arena for visiting sides, however the Hatters will need to wait a while longer before they receive visitors there. The stadium won’t be hosting Premier League football just yet and while the 10,356 capacity is enough to satisfy the requirements of the Premier League, other aspects of the ground fall short of the criteria. The work needed to bring the stadium up to the required standard will cost around £10 million and as such, the likelihood is that the Hatters’ first home game will be against West Ham United on September 1st.

Betting odds

Following their 4-1 demolition by Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, the bookmakers go as short as 2/7 on Luton Town dropping straight back down into the Championship at the first time of asking while most firms go 8/5 that they finish at the foot of the table. The Hatters are 5000/1 to win the Premier League title but while Leicester City achieved this at the very same odds, the chances of Luton managing this seem far slimmer to say the least.

Prediction

The likelihood is that Luton Town will struggle to keep their heads above water in what looks set to be a very strong and ultra-competitive premier League season. There’s no real reason to expect them to be whipping boys throughout the campaign although the tough task they face was illustrated in the thrashing by the Seagulls in their first league game of the campaign.. The likes of Nottingham Forest and Everton struggled last term and were lucky to keep their top-flight status but they are set to invest more than the Hatters.

Luton Town 2023/24 Odds

1/200 – Bottom Half of Table Finish

8/5  –  To Finish at Bottom of Premier League Table

66/1 –  To Finish in Top Half of Premier League Table

66/1 –  To Finish in Top Seven

500/1 – To Finish in Top Six

Update: 05.07.23

Luton Town are gearing themselves up for their first ever Premier League campaign and while many are predicting them to be relegated straight back to the Championship, there’s every chance that they might spring a few surprises in 2023/24.

Luton edged past Coventry City in the Championship play-off final to book themselves a place in next season’s Premier League campaign and many will be watching with interest as the Hatters enjoy their season in the sun.

Fixtures

Luton Town get their first ever Premier League campaign underway with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Seagulls certain to provide them with a stern test. The south-coast outfit have been exceptional of late and finished in the top six of the Premier League last season, thus earning for themselves a Europa League berth. Luton will be up against the likes of Burnley, Everton and West Ham United  in their opening seven league outings.

Burnley have also lifted themselves up from the Championship and this is a good chance for Luton to get a win on the board at this early stage of the campaign. Both West Ham United and Everton were in danger of the drop last term and while they are clearly big clubs, Luton need to be winning games like this.

In their closing five games, Luton will avoid any of last season’s top six sides and as such, they will be eager to still be in with a chance of avoiding the drop ahead of these closing games.

Players

Luton have yet to make any notable sales in the summer transfer market with no significant purchases. Chiedozie Ogbene has arrived on a free from Rotherham United and the likelihood is that he will feature heavily throughout next season. Mads Andersen has also arrived from Barnsley for an undisclosed sum, while we can expect Rob Edwards to splash the cash in the next few weeks as he prepares for life in the Premier League with Luton Town.

Title Odds

Luton Town are priced as high as 5000/1 to win the Premier League in 2023/24 and while these odds have been a winner in the past in this particular market, the Hatters being crowned English champions would certainly eclipse the incredible achievement of Leicester City.

Relegation Odds

As a rule, the side which wins promotion via the play-offs is generally the favourite to drop straight back down the following season and this year is no different, Luton Town a best price of just 2/5 to find themselves back in the Championship for the 2024/25 campaign. Encouragement will be taken from the fact that Nottingham Forest managed to avoid this fate last season but to be fair, the Premier League looks ultra-competitive and very strong for 2023/24.

Luton Town edged past Coventry City in the 2022/23 Championship play-off final to earn for themselves a place in the Premier League fir the very first time but how will the Hatters deal with the demands of top-flight football?

Luton Town may have plied their trade in the top tier of the English game in the past but they have never before taken part in a Premier League campaign, the Hatters having been relegated from the top flight the season before the Premier League came into existence. Nevertheless, having been out of the Football league altogether just ten years ago, they now find themselves dining at the top table of English football and understandably they have no intention of dropping straight back down at the first time of asking.

That said, Luton are in for a tough time of things and it will surely take them a while to find their feet. In the past few seasons, the likes of Brentford and AFC Bournemouth have managed to lift themselves into the Premier League for the very first time and keep themselves there for more than a single season, however the bookmakers don’t fancy Luton’s chances too much.

Most firms go 1/3 that the Hatters suffer relegation at the end of the 2023/24 season while most firms go 6/4 that they finish the campaign at the bottom of the Premier League table. Luton are priced at 1/40 for a bottom-half finish to the season although the more optimistic can get a best price of 28/1 that they finish in the top half of the league table.

Luton Town fans will be dreaming of their side doing the unthinkable and claiming a European berth and many will be gladly taking the odds of 66/1 and 250/1 on a top-six and top-seven finish respectively. Some will even be grabbing the 5000/1 on Luton Town winning the Premier League title in 2023/24? Now where have we seen those odds before?

Luton Town 2023/24 Odds

1/40 –  Bottom Half of Table Finish
