Liverpool v Leicester City Match Preview & Best Odds

Championship leaders Leicester City will look to emulate their fine league form in the third round of the League Cup when they take on Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

This will be the first involvement in the League Cup for Jurgen Klopp’s men this season and the home side head into this third round tie on the back of some fine form which has seen them enjoy 3-1 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League and LASK Linz in the Europa League. The Reds also won by this same scoreline at home to West Ham United last time out but on this occasion they didn’t need to come back from a goal behind to secure the victory.

Clearly the main aim for Jurgen Klopp this season will be to seal a Champions League place for 2024/25, either via a top-four finish in the Premier League or by winning the Europa League. On the domestic front, Klopp’s side have risen up to second position in the Premier League table with just two points separating them from leaders Manchester City while they are firm favourites to win Europe’s second-tier club competition. The Reds have won the League Cup more times than any other side with nine trophies to their name and while this match certainly won’t be high on the list of Klopp’s priorities, it’s hard to envisage them slipping up against the Championship leaders.

Leicester City have lost just once this season across competitions – this sole defeat being a 1-0 loss to Hull City prior to the international break – but they have managed to bounce back with subsequent wins over Southampton, Norwich City and Bristol City. The promotion ambitions of the Foxes will be put to one side this evening as the East Midlands side look to move into the last sixteen of the League Cup but we expect them to be subjected to a rude awakening in this third round clash. Liverpool have been red hot this season so far with multiple-goal showings being commonplace, therefore we expect Klopp’s men having relatively few hurdles to overcome in their passage into the next round of the competition.
