Neither Aberdeen nor HJK Helsinki can afford to slip-up a second time in this season’s Europa Conference League and they go head-to-head with each other at Pittodrie on Thursday evening.
Aberdeen enjoyed something of a resurgence towards the end of the 2022/23 Scottish Premiership campaign and while the honeymoon period for manager Barry Robson has looked pretty much over at times, recent results have been extremely encouraging with a 2-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt being followed by successive victories over Ross County (4-0 in Premiership and 2-1 in League Cup Quarter-final) and Rangers (3-1 at Ibrox). These results have come on the back of early-season struggles and as such, the Dons remain in the lower reaches of the Scottish Premiership table after seven rounds of fixtures, however they are just two points short of the top four and will be confident not maintaining the momentum in European competition this week.
HJK Helsinki are being regarded as the minnows in the group but they did manage to remain level until the final ten minutes with a PAOK side which had thumped Heart of Midlothian to the tune of 6-1 on aggregate in the playoffs. The visitors are expected to give the Dons a hard time at Pittodrie although they haven’t managed a win on their travels whilst in European competition since August 2022. They will play a part in what is expected to be a tense affair on Thursday evening but with Aberdeen still on a high from their weekend win at Ibrox, we’ll be siding with the hosts to do enough to earn all three points here.
